How to Prepare for National Portfolio Day
National Portfolio Day is one of the best opportunities a young artist has: a single day where you can sit across from admissions representatives from art schools all over the country and get honest feedback on your work. It's also crowded, fast, and a little overwhelming if you walk in unprepared. This checklist will help you get the most out of it.

Before the day
Find your event. Check the National Portfolio Day Association website for dates, locations, and participating schools. Some events now ask you to register in advance, so read the details.
Make a short list of schools. Circle the three to five you care most about and plan to visit those tables first. Lines get long by midday.
Choose 10–20 pieces. Bring your strongest work, not everything you've ever made. Include observational drawing, since nearly every school wants to see that you can draw from life.
Include work in progress. Unfinished pieces can start great conversations. Reviewers want to see where you're headed, not just where you've been.
Bring your sketchbooks. This is often where reviewers learn the most about you. Your sketchbook shows how you think, experiment, and solve problems.
Photograph 3D, large, or fragile work. Have clear images on a tablet or laptop (fully charged) along with a few printed photos as backup.
Organize your work so it's easy to flip through. A simple portfolio case or folder works fine. Remove anything smudged, torn, or unlabeled.
Write down your questions. Think about what you actually want to know from each school.

Questions worth asking
What stands out as my strongest work?
What feels missing from my portfolio?
What would you want to see more of before I apply?
Do you see a direction or idea I should keep developing?

On the day
Arrive early. Doors open and lines form fast.
Be ready to talk about your work. Know why you made each piece and what you were exploring. A few thoughtful sentences go a long way.
Take notes after every review. You will not remember it all by the end of the day. Ask a parent or friend to jot things down while you listen.
Stay open. You may hear different opinions from different schools. That's normal, and useful.
Collect information. Grab brochures, scholarship details, and the name of the person you spoke with.

After the day
Look for patterns in the feedback. If three reviewers said the same thing, pay attention.
Make a plan. Decide which pieces to strengthen, replace, or develop further before your application deadlines.
Follow up with any schools you connected with. A short thank-you note is always appreciated.

A strong portfolio isn't just a collection of your best-looking pieces. It shows how you think as an artist. National Portfolio Day is a chance to find out whether your work is communicating that, and to spend the months ahead making sure it does.
